Hell Freezes Over: CFD! Podcast Recording Today

Gr3ml1n GamingThe Midwest snows may have melted away, but the weather forecast in Hades is looking a wee bit chilly today.

That’s right – the long-delayed Crush! Frag! Destroy! podcast is finally about to be recorded! There’s just one problem, though… We need a name!

Yes, we have yet to decide on a proper name for this beast and we’re taking suggestions from you, our (potential) listeners. So drop us a comment below with your suggestions and make them good (FYI: FragCast and CrushCast are both already existing shows elsewhere, plus they’re not terribly creative). Give us your best, your weirdest, your most inventive!

Also, if you have any comments, questions or other contributions for us, leave us a comment below, drop us a Twitter message (@CrushFragDstroy) or post on the Facebook page and we’ll try to work them into the show.

Hit the jump for a quick rundown of what we’re going to be covering on our inaugural broadcast.

Ezio’s Roman Road Trip Goes Multiplayer, New Assassin’s Creed Title Arrives This Fall

ac2_s_018

Details on the previously announced follow-up to 2009’s smash hit Assassin’s Creed II have popped up in Ubisoft’s third quarter financial conference call. Confirming my suspicions that such a game would star protagonist Ezio, Ubisoft revealed that the hero will romp about Rome subduing the Templar opposition.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Announced, Title Contains a Colon

What do Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Ubisoft’s own Splinter Cell: Conviction all have in common? If you said third-person perspective… well, yes, but that’s not what I meant.

Seriously, every game under the sun is using colons in the title, and today’s announcement of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier wasn’t going to miss out on that trend. Previously mentioned in an avalanche of Ubisoft news, GR:FS will offer “cutting-edge technology, prototype high-tech weaponry, and state-of-the-art single-player and multiplayer modes.”

Assassin’s Creed II – Crush! Frag! Review!

ac2logoAssassin’s Creed was 2007’s “love it or hate it” game. Personally, I was negative on the title. It was plagued by a predictable story, repetitive and bland side-missions, and a bizarre (and boring) decision to center the game’s focus on Desmond Miles, a modern-era bartender who happened to be related to historical assassins. A mysterious doctor named Vidic and his assistant, Lucy, forced Desmond into using a machine called the Animus to retrieve memories encoded within his DNA. These Animus sequences occurred in interactive cutscenes that popped up after you completed an assassination, but required little more of you than to put Desmond to bed.

That said, Assassin’s Creed II completely blindsided me. I had no interest in this game outside of the new, interesting setting in the Italian city-states of the Renaissance period. What I found, however, is one of the deepest and most creative open-world video games in recent memory. +Continue Reading

Ubisoft Delays Splinter Cell, Adds New Assassin’s Creed to Early 2011

ubi

French publisher Ubisoft has detailed their plans for their fiscal year 2010, which begins in April and will wrap up in March 2011.

Included in those plans are a two-month delay of Splinter Cell: Conviction (damn you, Ubi!), a new Ghost Recon title, and a third full-fledged Assassin’s Creed game. Hot on the heels of November’s acclaimed hit Assassin’s Creed II, I certainly didn’t expect a turnaround so quickly. The press release hints that the new chapter in the series “will be the first…to have an online multiplayer mode.”

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands Gets the Spike VGA Treatment, You Know the Drill

Remember the last Prince of Persia game? It reinvented the series by adding a surprisingly helpful AI companion and a beautiful art style that intrigued even my video game hating mother. It would be nice to see an improvement on that title, right?

Wrong, apparently.

To accompany this May’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie comes the previously announced Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. The Prince is back(?) and is considerably uglier than the previous titles, but boasts a less exposed chest than Jake Gyllenhaal’s version of the character.

The following trailer itself shows no gameplay, but suggest a more platforming-focused approach to the series, hopefully bringing it back to the glory days of the original Sands of Time.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands releases May 2010.

I just wish he didn’t look like a really ugly guy I know…

Ubisoft Talks New Prince of Persia, Natal Support During Investor’s Call

ubilogo.jpgUbisoft held a call to its investors recently to discuss the company’s fiscal first half results and outline some of their plans and expectations for the upcoming third and fourth quarters. In addition to discussing financials (an operating loss of $117 million) and the high first week sales of  Assassin’s Creed II, CEO Yves Guillemot also dropped some intriguing news concerning the company’s Natal support and a new entry in the Prince of Persia franchise: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

Not So Sweet News: Ubisoft Says “No” To HD No More Heroes

simjpnomoreheroes0001

The past week has been a roller coaster ride for fans of Goichi Suda’s No More Heroes. As one of the few third-party games on the Wii that carries any credibility among the “hardcore” crowd, No More Heroes tends to get more than its fair share of fan attention. Earlier this week, Japan’s Famitsu magazine broke news that the original entry in the series was going to be updated and ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The article revealed that the new version, entitled No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, will contain updated graphics, a Japanese language track (even in Japan, the original game only contained English voices), and a “Very Sweet Mode” which would allow gamers to unlock sexy outfits for the game’s ladies. It sounded great but the only question for us North American gamers was “Is it coming to the West?”

Here’s The Entire Assassin’s Creed Lineage Short Film

You may recall we posted the first part of Hybride Studio and Ubisoft’s short Assassin’s Creed II prequel film, Assassin’s Creed Lineage, a couple of weeks ago. It was a pretty neat chunk of backstory with really excellent production values.

Well, assuming that you’re somehow unable to play ACII for the time being (maybe you’re stuck at work/school or you just won’t have the money till payday), this should hold you over in the meantime. Ubisoft has not only released the other two parts on their YouTube channel, but have also posted the entire film in one 36 minute video!

The full short is below or, assuming you already watched the first one and want to skip ahead, you can head under the jump for parts two and three separately.

Avatar Video Shows Na’vi Gameplay

Yes, yes – we get it already. “Environmentally Friendly Natives Good – Warlike White Man Bad.” Thank you, James Cameron for making sure that we will never forget this lesson when Avatar (and its related video game attachments) hits theaters next month.

Seriously though – while I do, for the most part, kind of agree with that statement (you might be surprised how much of a tree-hugger I am), one does have to wonder how bows-and-arrows and primitive melee weapons are supposed to take down space marines with power armor and automatic weaponry.

I suppose one could point toward the plucky Ewoks and their victory over the Empire, but let’s face facts here – Stormtroopers couldn’t seem to shoot straight to save their poor cloned lives and the Ewoks did have the home turf advantage.

Plus, they weren’t ten-feet tall with flying dinosaur mounts and (apparently) Predator-style cloaking devices like the Na’vi. I’m sure those help.
