Releasing only a few months after the 2004 launch of the Nintendo DS, Trauma Center: Under the Knife was one of the earliest and most successful games designed almost entirely to suit the handheld’s fresh interface. Set in the near future and centered around the exploits of lighting-handed miracle-doctor Derek Stiles (a name built upon several layers of system-related pun, as was the custom of the time), Trauma Center’s fast-paced surgery simulation did well enough to warrant a slew of sequels across the DS and eventually the Wii.
The problem, in retrospect, was that each of these games, good as they may have been, were created in the near-exact image of the first; by repeatedly relying on the surgical tropes and frequently overwrought narrative gimmicks of the original, the once-exciting series managed to slip into a strange purgatory. The quality may have carried across from sequel to subsequent sequel, but the lack of originality was glaring and the series was quickly reaching a point where significant changes would be necessary.
Okay, so this episode is a… little bit late. As in, it was originally supposed to be up just prior to E3. Yeah.
Rather than focus on the “why” and “how” of it all, we’re just going to let you enjoy this show. It was recorded in an age long ago. A time before E3 2010, when we didn’t yet know that a new Kid Icarus game was coming. Back when Microsoft’s camera-thingee was still Project Natal. Before Kevin Butler delivered his rousing inspirational speech at Sony’s presser.
Ahh, such simpler days, those were. How young and carefree we all were back then.
We’re almost done with the Trauma Team walkthrough videos, kids! This one focuses on First Response gameplay, where you take on the role of feisty, spicy paramedic Maria Torres.
First Response plays out similarly to the standard gameplay, but simplified – after all, you’re just trying to stabilize the patient for transport – with the added wrinkle of having to juggle between multiple patients at once. Looks like this’ll be a nail biter on the time management front.
Since 2005, Atlus’ Trauma Center series has delivered a steady stream of fast-paced, interactive surgery action. After four games based solely on that concept, though, Atlus has decided to shake things up a bit. Instead of focusing strictly on the surgical portion of a medical case, Trauma Team will give you the opportunity to play as characters from six different fields of medicine: First Response, Diagnostics, Forensics, Surgery, Endoscopy, and Orthopedics.
One of goals of Trauma Team is to expand the scope of the previous games, and a clear indication of that intention is the diagnostics mode. We recently had a chance to take in a live demonstration of some of the diagnostics gameplay. Read on for the description.
When someone talks about forensic science, generally one doesn’t immediately think of medical dramas. Instead, crime-scene procedurals like CSI tend to leap to mind, or even shows with a more peripheral relation to the subject matter, like Dexter. However, with Trauma Team, Atlus is bringing medical investigation into the Trauma Center series for the first time, albeit without furries or serial killers in tow (hey, you can’t have everything, right?).
Take a look at the video above and then keep an eye open for our preview of Trauma Team, coming to CFD! very soon.
You know, it’s a good thing we’re not surgeons in real life; patients would be dying left and right due to our gross negligence. Case in point with these videos for Atlus’ upcoming Trauma Team for Wii.
In this newest iteration on the Trauma Center series of “anime drama-meets-hospital drama”, rather than playing a single surgeon, you actually take control of an entire team of medical specialists: from the emergency first responders to diagnosticians to medical forensics experts.
Atlus has been trickling out these walkthrough videos for each branch of the team for a few weeks now, but we’ve been lagging behind in getting them up. See what we mean? If you were relying on us for emergency medical care, you’d have bled out by now!
So we’re going to start off with the most recent video, focusing on Orthopedics and then write you a referral to head under the jump, where you can find the Endoscopy and Surgery videos, respectively. Just promise not to sue – our malpractice insurance isn’t paid up.
Although you’d never know it from the rather bland demeanor of the voiceover guy in this video, the world of medical emergencies is an exciting place. In this video, Atlus goes “behind the scenes” on Trauma Team, the latest upcoming release in the Trauma Center series.
This time, instead of controlling a single surgeon, you’ll have your bloodstained fingers in a number of different medical pies: orthopedics, endoscopy, forensics and more. Hell, you can even indulge your inner Dr. House and go down the diagnostician path!
Enjoy this quick look at Trauma Team, due to hit Wii-mergency rooms across the country in spring of 2010.
