South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! – Crush! Frag! Review!

It’s a bit strange to realize that South Park has only been on the air for 12 years now; Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny feel like they’ve been an integral part of the fabric of pop culture for far longer. What’s stranger still is that for all its weight in the public mindshare, only three attempts had been made to translate Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s brainchild into into video game form before now. By comparison, its closest counterpart in terms of longevity, The Simpsons, has spawned over 20 home video game releases, if you count PC titles.

TGS 2009: South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! Screens

A new batch of screenshots came out of Tokyo Game Show for South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! Tower defense games aren’t exactly known for being terribly exciting to watch in action, which is why the cutscene screen above is about the most exciting thing you’ll see after you hit the jump.

And even though in my heart of hearts I know it won’t be in the game, I can only hope and pray for a wave of everyone’s favorite gay fish (and award interrupter), Kayne West, to be able to throw yellow snowballs at.

South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! GamesCom Trailer

Things got a bit away from me this weekend and I wasn’t able to get all the assets from GamesCom in Cologne posted up that I wanted to. What this means is you’ll probably see the last bits of them trickle onto the site over the next day or two.

To start with with have the first, full-blown trailer for the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade South Park tower defense game (yes, you read that right – tower defense) that was revealed a month back. Enjoy this clip of South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play!

XBLA South Park Game Revealed…and it’s Tower Defense??

Yes, the Xbox Live Arcade South Park game, first announced a year ago, has been uncovered… and it’s a tower defense game. While the rest of you are letting that all sink in, we would like to make a desperate plea to all the game developers out there.

Guys – unless you have serious presence in front of the camera or good comedic timing, do us, the gamers of the world, a favor and stop trying to be funny. Please? The first snippet of the video above where lead designer John Scott Tynes’ attempts to describe the genre of South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play! is just… well, we’ll just say awkwardly painful at best and leave it at that. We won’t even touch on the joke he makes near the end. You don’t all have to try and be Tim Schafer, really. Just make a fun game. We promise we won’t love you any less.

That being said, despite the borderline oversaturation of the tower defense genre at the moment (as a glance at my iPod touch will confirm), I’ll at least be checking out the demo when it comes out on October 7th. The co-op play combined with the more active action elements have me wondering if something like this is just what the genre needs to move forward.
