PixelJunk Shooter – Crush! Frag! Review!

pixeljunk_shooterI think it’s a fairly safe assumption that we’ve all played at least one 2D shooter at some point. I also think we can all agree that over the years there hasn’t been a whole lot of progress with the genre’s mechanics. Don’t get me wrong; there were a handful of games that truly managed to do something new (Ikaruga‘s polarity system and Einhander‘s emphasis on “weapon flipping” and 2.5D presentation are two good examples), it’s just that those types of games have been few and far between. So what about PixelJunk Shooter? Does it raise the bar and present a new experience? Or is it just another fun, albeit uninspired, blast-fest?

PixelJunk Shooter is a quirky, stylized shooter that plays like a puzzle game with a variety of liquids which will each react differently to one other and are governed by their own rules and physics. Feel free to take a stab at that answer.

PixelJunk Shooter Preview Vid from Comic-Con 2009

I think it’s fair to say gamers have pretty much forgiven Q-Games for getting the PixelJunk franchise off to a rough start. When you follow mediocre games like 2007′s PixelJunk Racers with excellent offerings like PixelJunk Monsters and PixelJunk Eden, it’s really hard not to.

So, for those of you salivating in anticipation for this year’s newest entry, the rather blandly named PixelJunk Shooter, we have a little treat for you: SCEA’s Matt Morton demoing part of the game live at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Mmm…delicious, delicious fluid physics. Though if we had one complaint about this video, it would simply be that we spent way too much time focused on Matt’s face and not enough on the in-game footage. I can understand pulling back now and then to show us controls and for the intro and wrap-up. However, you’re supposed to be selling us on the game, not distracting us with the pattern on your shirt and the gap in your front teeth, Matt.

And before anyone blows a gasket, I have a gap in my front teeth too, so hush – I’m allowed to make fun of it.

Name That Game: The PixelJunk Edition

Can you name the following game?

No?

Did you even try?

It’s okay – I don’t know the name either, but that’s because it doesn’t have one…not yet at least. You could change that though if you’re creative enough. PixelJunk are look for fan submissions to name their latest offering. So head over to their site, check out the video and get your creative juices flowing. Once you’ve found the perfect name, click http://pixeljunk.jp/namingcontest/ and submit it.

The winner will see their name in the credits as well as recieve a t-shirt. A t-shirt? That seems a bit mundane. Personally, I’d rather have won some concept drawings or something, but maybe it’s a really awesome t-shirt.

PixelJunk Eden Encore Lands on PSN This Thursday

PixelJunk Eden Encore LogoWhen was the last time you played PixelJunk Eden?

Has it been a while? Have you been waiting for new content or maybe just gave up at some point?

Well whatever your reason for leaving the gardens, it’s time to go back.  PixelJunk Eden Encore will be available on PSN this Thursday for $5.99 and will offer 5 new gardens with music and graphics by Baiyon as well as new trophies and several new features.  Most notably is the addition of a smart bomb that your Grimp will have at his disposal which will cause all of the “Prowlers” on screen to explode into clouds of pollen when you jump into three full seeds in a row.  This feature is such an important addition to the game that it will be patched into the original game as well on Thursday.

Check out the video below to get a glimpse of the new smart bomb in action as well as a taste of the new levels.

Be sure to collect all 25 new Spectra to unlock a suprise at the end of Encore that will allow you to play through the entire game again in a new way.
