Hello again, everyone. It’s the return of another feature we haven’t done in a couple of months – the NPD sales figures! Exciting, huh? Well, we figured since the numbers for January were now out, it would be a good time to start again, what with it being a fresh year and all that.
So, where do we begin? New Super Mario Bros. Wii held on to the top slot for another month, though it didn’t get anywhere near its astronomical December sales of over 2.5 million. Mass Effect 2 was hot on its heels, however, moving 572k in only six days on the shelves. Beyond that, the top ten was full of mainstays and titles with huge bases like Modern Warfare 2. Vigil’s first entry, the Joe Madureira-created Darksiders, cracked the bottom of the list, along with Ubisoft’s Just Dance and EA’s Army of Two: The 40th Day.
On the hardware front, nothing was too surprising. Nintendo led both the handheld and console leads, as usual. Meanwhile, Sony’s venerable PlayStation 2 didn’t even manage to crack 50k units. How much longer before Sony pulls the plug? It sounds like the PS2 is already on life support as it is, with a growing number of developers announcing less or no support for it this year. Hardware as a whole was down 21% from last year.
Hit the jump for the specific numbers for the last two months.
To overlook New Super Mario Bros. Wii based on the assumption that the game is either a) just another Mario game or b) just a sequel to the fun, yet underwhelming New Super Mario Bros. on the DS is, putting it bluntly, wrong. What NSMBW does, and what the aforementioned DS game failed to do, is take 20+ years of Mario games and create an experience utilizing elements from each installment. Going further yet, the game also introduces new variables, yet the pieces effortlessly fit together, as if all somehow planned from the beginning.
Yes, be you a lowly plumber or a nobleman’s son-turned-assassin, this is your time to shine, sons of Italy! But there’s a lot more than just New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Assassin’s Creed II coming out this week, if you’re looking for fare with no connections to the Big Boot.
For example, you have the remastered, repackaged God of War Collection coming out for PS3… no, wait – Greece is just a hop across the Ionian Sea from Italy. Nevermind. Umm… how about Left 4 Dead 2? Well, I mean, I suppose in theory some of the zombies could possibly be of Italian heritage. Man, this is harder than I thought.
How about this – just hit the jump and see for yourself what grabs your interest this week. That sounds like a safe bet for all of us.
Nintendo had several surprises in store for fans this morning at their press conference, but one of the most intriguing was New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This latest addition to the Wii’s holiday lineup will add a multiplayer twist to the familiar mix of platforming and coin collecting. Players will control one of 4 playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad) and work together or battle against each other as they make their way through this side scrolling adventure.
