June NPDs: Prototype Claims Top Spot, Hardware Sales Improve Slightly

npd_logo_color.jpgFlipper hands beat mixed martial arts. The sales numbers don’t lie.

Prototype made a big showing in its Xbox 360 incarnation with just over 400k, pushing the same platform’s UFC 2009: Undisputed out of the top slot. However, neither game’s PS3 incarnation broke June’s top ten – we assume that Prototype was held at bay by gruff bike messenger-turned-power station, Cole McGrath. His sandbox title, inFamous, served as the gatekeeper for the bottom of the charts, which was a respectable 192,700 copies.

Filling out the middle zones were both versions of EA’s Fight Night Round 4, with a combined total creeping toward half a million – 471,100 to be precise – at numbers six and seven. EA Sports Active held onto third, just above the debut of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for Wii. Lastly, THQ’s 360 version of Red Faction: Guerrilla premiered at number nine, with just a hair under 200k sold.

Rounding out the charts were longtime Wii repeat performers. However, surprisingly enough, Wii Play was not one of them. It seems consumers must have finally purchased enough extra controllers as the warhorse title ended its 29 month stay in the top ten. Also notable by their absence were titles like The Conduit and Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

Hardware charts stayed in roughly the same order as May with only PSP and PS2 shifting places and while numbers are up from the month previous, consoles are down year-over-year for the last four months now. Is this the slow beginnings of an upturn or just a momentary pause before a further fall?

Hit the jump for the specific numbers and their comparison to last month’s.

New Releases This Week – June 21st, 2009

overlordii_wolf_mounts.jpgWhile this week isn’t on part with the last few in terms of AAA releases, its not too much of a slouch.

Feel like taking on epic, deadly beasts? Two choices for you: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite or Fight Night Round 4 (hey, I sure as hell wouldn’t have messed with Tyson in his prime…or probably even today for that matter).

There’s also The Conduit for your Wii/FPS fix, SMT: Devil Survivor for your MegaTen obsession and three different flavors of Overlord for you if you like spreading havoc and chaos with an army of minions.

Hit the jump for the full list and let us know what you plan on picking up this week in the comments section below.

Fight Night Round 4 Has Style – Do You?

Yet another Fight Night Round 4 video, kids – this time showcasing the fighting styles of various boxers in game. It’s interesting to see Mike Tyson in a video game again, made doubly ironic by the proximity to the release of a new Punch-Out!! title by Nintendo. Let’s hope they go with “Young and on top of his game” Tyson instead of “Tattooed, crazy and broke” Tyson. Either way, not someone you’d want punching you upside of your head.

Oh Look – More Fight Night Screens!

jones_01.jpgWe’re not really sure just how much more EA Sports can hammer home the point of how awesome Fight Night Round 4 looks. Yes, we’ve seen the trailers showing the game in action. Yes, we’ve seen the last batch of screenshots. Yes, we remember how great its predecessor looked for its time…hell, how great it looks even now for that matter.

However, EA smells blood in the water and they have us backed up onto the ropes. We’re doing our best rope-a-dope, trying vainly to hold on until the sweet release of the bell brings us to the end of the round and a well needed rest, but we can’t hold out forever. Plus, that cut on our cheek is rapidly swelling our eye shut. This doesn’t bode well.

If you can’t wait for more shots of sweaty men in shiny shorts beating the living hell out of each other, head under the cut for more to hold you over until this summer.

Fight Night Round 4 Physics Look Painful

2006′s Fight Night Round 3 was a graphical showpiece for what was, at the time, a spanking new Xbox 360. Despite a few minor graphical glitches here and there, it was really a gorgeous game to see in action. Thankfully, EA Sports didn’t rush in bringing Fight Night Round 4 to us. What a difference three years can make, eh?

The video above shows off some of the new physics engine based gameplay. One of the nice things about having a game where all the action is tightly focused on two large characters onscreen and little else is that the full horsepower of the system can be channeled into making those two characters look as amazing as possible. Check it out June 30th on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
