The folks at Bungie have wrapped up their “swan song”, Halo: Reach, and are moving onto whatever the hell they’re doing for Activision for the next ten years.
Seriously, they’re moving. Bungie’s got to be finished with everything at the moment, since they’re moving their whole office to a new location. If that’s not a sign the disk has been shipped off to Microsoft, I don’t know what is.
There’s also a shiny new trailer for the “Most Highly Anticipated Game of 2010,” so take a look for yourself. Also, email those folks a picture of you holding StarCraft II and flipping them off. Lying bastards.
During last week’s Comic-Con spectacular, Bungie revealed two major additions to its already beefy Halo spin-off, Halo: Reach. Both should be familiar to Halo fans, but might not be quite what they expected based on previous iterations of the franchise.
Comic-Con isn’t a video game convention, per se, but that hasn’t stopped the gaming industry from having an increasingly strong presence there every year. So it wasn’t surprising that Capcom had a panel at Comic-Con to talk about Street Fighter. What was surprising was when Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken 6‘s producer) crashed the panel to help unveil the trailer for Street Fighter X Tekken.
Few details about the crossover fighting game were given outside of what could already be gleaned from the trailer, but we do know it’s being developed for Xbox 360 and PS3, and (this is really interesting) there will be two separate versions of the game. Street Fighter X Tekken will be developed by Capcom and will play like Street Fighter IV. At the same time, Namco will be making Tekken X Street Fighter, which will unsurprisingly play more like a Tekken game. Let the fanboy wars begin.
Oh, EA has pretty much just pissed off fans of 29 NHL teams.
For the second year in a row, a member of the Chicago Blackhawks will be featured as the cover athlete of EA’s NHL series. Last year saw Patrick Kane slapped on the front of the box, while this year will feature linemate and fellow face of the franchise, Jonathan Toews. For the first time in the series’ 20 year lifespan the same team has been featured in back to back iterations.
In stunning fashion, Microsoft’s E3 presser kicked off with an extended look at Call of Duty: Black Ops, followed by Hideo Kojima’s presentation of Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the Raiden-enabled third-person action title by Kojima Productions.
Detailing spiffy bullet (sword?) time effects, destructible objects, and the sexiest (wo)man since Edward Cullen, Rising was one of the more impressive eyes-on titles during the Xbox press conference. Take a look for yourselves, then hop on over to the recap of CFD!’s liveblog of the event. It’s certainly… something.
So EA just revealed a new gameplay video for Dead Space 2. The short version: it looks fucking phenomenal.
Isaac gets attacked by necromorphs (*spoiler alert*), then proceeds to turn them into little chunks suitable for stew or perhaps a borscht. It all looks fantastic and showcases many new features such as the Javelin, some actually different environments, the fact that Kinesis doesn’t suck anymore (pinning a Slasher to the wall with its own severed arm, FTW!!!) and plenty more of that crazy awesome presentation we’ve come to expect from the franchise.
But hands-down the best part of the video is the fact that it showcases exactly the kind of gameplay, scares and gruesomeness fans of the original game have been clamoring for. So all that worrying about Dead Space 2 turning into another Resident Evil 5 (i.e. not scary, too much ammo and shooting, etc…) appears to have been for nothing. Of course it’s still too soon to tell as the game isn’t slated for release until January 25th, 2011, but I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s probably going to become my new most favoritest game ever. Just a hunch.
Ever since Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki and Tecmo had their tragic breakup, people have been wondering where the infamous game designer would go, and what he would do after leaving Team Ninja. Well, in a move entirely befitting Itagaki-san’s trademark brash style, he started up his own outfit, Valhalla Game Studios, staffed it with former Team Ninja members, and set to work creating a new game so violent that it makes Ninja Gaiden 2 look downright wussy. That game, ladies and gentlemen, is called Devil’s Third.
In the beforemath of the industry typhoon that is E3, Valhalla Game Studios revealed its flagship title with this eye-catching trailer. Outside of the fact that THQ is publishing the game, the trailer doesn’t give us much concrete information about Devil’s Third. However, it has been said that actions speak louder than words, and it looks like Itagaki is more than content to let his guns (and swords, bazookas, etc…) do the talking for him. Hopefully there will be more information available later during E3, but for now we’re left to consider the image of a man using a minigun to practice skeet shooting on a hapless flying ninja.
In a move that absolutely nobody saw coming, Far Cry and Crysis developer Crytek announced they would be bringing an exclusive title to the Xbox 360.
Dubbed Codename: Kingdoms, the game will apparently take place in Sparta at the height of its power. There’s no clear direction for the game besides the setting, as only live-action footage was shown (unless it’s running CryEngine 4 and it looks THAT good).
Halo fans, rejoice! Microsoft’s E3 presser provided us with our first look at Bungie’s new first-person shooter and it certainly looks like Halo.
Beginning on a beachhead similar to The Silent Cartographer level in the original Halo, a squad of Spartans all sporting different weapons, powers, and appearances power their way up the beach. Your standard FPS gameplay was shown, what with the shooting, exploding, and running, but the big shocker came at the end. As the Spartans escaped into the atmosphere, they went horizontal (?) and engaged Covenant air forces in space dogfighting; a first for the Halo series.
Is Halo: Reach shaping up to be different enough from the previous titles to warrant your attention? Let us know what you think!
In case you haven’t heard, we’re getting a new Contra. Kind of. You see, Konami has decided to give Arc System Works (of Guilty Gear fame) the task of bringing us a 2D side-scrolling shooter that shares everything from their classic franchise except the name. And 1UP seems to have gone and gotten themselves a little preview of the next Contra that’s not actually Contra. The lucky little…
Okay, first off, we’re sorry for getting this posted up on Saturday evening. In doing this, we have perpetuated a great injustice to fans (or potential fans) of Team Fortress 2 who already have to deal with the indignity of being Mac owners. We will do our best to make things better posthaste.
First, as you already know, Valve’s multiplayer shoot-stravaganza, Team Fortress 2, launched on Steam for Macs on Thursday, June 9th. This was already amazing enough news as it is. However, there’s more to it than just that.
It’s weird when you think about it, really. So many of the things that were predicted in cyberpunk fiction two decades plus ago have since come to pass in one form or another that at times the once-edgy genre seems almost quaint at times.
Then we got ahold of the new trailer for Deux Ex: Human Revolution.
Welcome to William Gibson’s wet dream in video form. Suddenly it’s 1985 all over again and I’m ready to get slotted with cyberware and fight the megacorps from the shadows.
Seriously – how freakin’ cool does this look? Sure, it’s only CG cinematics and the voice acting is pretty awful, but strictly from a visual design standpoint? It looks amazing! I’m already sold and I never even got around to playing the first two Deus Ex titles!
Okay, maybe 2007 if we want to include Half-Life 2: Episode One & Two into the mix. So worst case scenario, Mac users are only three years behind.
Regardless, it’s happening. In keeping with their promise to release all of their titles for Mac, Valve dropped their flagship game and its two expansions yesterday on the fruity side of the Steam client. Now pretentious hipsters can fall in love with Alyx Vance just like the rest of the world did years ago!
Atlus released a new trailer for Persona 3 Portable. For those of you who are hatless and therefore not on par with everyone else, the (totally awesome) game of Persona 3 is being ported from the PS2 to the PSP. Now, instead of just playing as an emo boy, you can play as a girl! And the best part? As evident at the end of the video, if you pre-order the game, you get a FREE HAT!
Okay so it’s not really FREE since you have the buy the game but… FREE HAT!
Keep your eyes peeled for Rob Rich’s preview of Persona 3 Portable to be up next week. Or don’t wait – just go pre-order it now!
Tomb Raider was the shiznit during the early PlayStation era. This is fact. The series kinda fell off after Tomb Raider 2. This is also fact. Although Laura has made some decent attempts recently in her bid to reclaim her glory days atop the pile of video game heroines, none of them have quite captured the magic we felt during her first tomb raiding excursions.
Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are taking things down a slightly different rubble-and-trap strewn path this time around, however. Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light is different in several notable ways: a) it’s a downloadable title, b) it features co-op gameplay, and c) it eschews the traditional 3rd person behind-the-back camera for a top-down, isometric view.
And we now have an official premier trailer to share with you all, showing us Laura and her new Mayan buddy, Totec, jumping, flipping and shooting their way through all-new levels. What do you think?
Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light hits PSN, Xbox Live Arcade and Steam in Summer 2010.
