CFD! Invades Seattle For PAX Prime 2010

pax2010logo

We’ve meant to post this for a little while now, but to be perfectly and totally honest with you, planning for it has left us so frazzled that it’s only a week out that we’re actually getting around to making a formal, official announcement on the site.

Crush! Frag! Destroy! will be at PAX Prime 2010.

Well, three of us will be, at least. That’s still better than nothing, right?

CFD!’s Gaming Grab-Bag Giveaway

ggg_contest

We have stuff. You enjoy stuff, right? Who doesn’t enjoy stuff?

Well you’re in luck, because we’re giving that stuff away. We have a couple of spare games to offer this week, but sadly, only single copies of each one. So, rather than run a separate contest for each one of them, leaving them feeling all lonely and vulnerable, we figured we’d just heap them into a pile and let you have at them that way.

The other nice thing is that all of these prizes tie into site content we’re going to be posting this week. I’m sure you’ve all already seen our Joe Danger review today, so if it sounds like something that revs your engine, we have a copy to give away! Tomorrow will see our review for Doom II for XBLA, and Wednesday will have us returning to Ferelden with a review for Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening (and no, we’re not giving a copy of that away, but we do have a different DA:O DLC pack to give out).

Want to know what you have to do to get your hands on some stuff? Of course you do. Just hit that jump for stuff-related details.

CFD!’s DeathSpank Giveaway Spanktacular

ds_box_art_slice

Hey there, kids! Who’s up for a slice of justice with a side of comedy? Show of hands?

Well, you’re in luck! To celebrate this week’s upcoming release of Ron Gilbert’s DeathSpank (yes, that’s right – The Secret of Monkey Island‘s Ron Gilbert) on XBLA and PSN, our friends over at EA and Hothead Games have graciously provided us with some free copies of the game for our loyal readers. So if you’re down for a little Diablo-style action-RPG gameplay mixed with a liberal dose of humor, we’ve got your hook-up.

However, there’s a catch. There’s always a catch, after all. We’re not going to just do the typical random drawing sweepstakes this time around. We’re going to make you work a little bit for it.

Just how much work, you ask? Hit that jump and find out.

Team DeathChat Records Tonight – Review Scores, Journalism & More

team_deathchat_w_textAfter another short hiatus (and one aborted attempt yesterday), we will be returning to our headsets tonight to record episode 8 of CFD!’s Team DeathChat. Aren’t you excited? Well, aren’t you? I can’t HEAR you!

But I digress. For tonight’s discussion topic/community interaction segment, we wanted to talk about a couple of things and get your opinion on them as well.

You may have noticed we recently revamped CFD!’s review system slightly. We’ll be taking a little bit of time on the podcast to talk about that and probably the topic of reviews in general. We also want to touch on the state of that eternal hot-button phrase, “video games journalism” and what it really means, if anything. Oh, and we’ll likely be announcing next week’s contest as well. If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that people respond well to bribery.

We want to hear your comments and field your questions on all of these topics, plus anything else you’d like for us touch upon. Hit us up in the comments below, email us at podcast@crushfragdestroy.com, hit us on Twitter (@CrushFragDstroy) or throw a comment on our Facebook page. I think that’s more than enough ways to reach us, don’t you?

TDC Episode 7 Recording Tomorrow – We Want Your Words!

team_deathchat_w_textAfter taking a short break last week, we’re getting back on the rickety unicycle that is Team DeathChat with a new episode this week. We’re going to be recording tomorrow morning, so you have time to send us your questions, comments and other amusements. Seriously. We need the encouragement to get up early on a Saturday morning.

We do have a focus question to prompt those of you who have no idea what to write to us about, however: “E3 is just about to break wide open, but a lot of big announcements have already been made leading up to now. Barring what has already been leaked or announced early, what’s your Dream E3 2010 Surprise Game Announcement?”

Don’t feel limited to just this topic, though. We want to hear what you guys are doing, what you think of the show and more. Leave your comments in this thread below, email them to podcast@crushfragdestroy.com, leave them on Facebook or (should you be able to compress your thoughts into 140 characters or less) Tweet them to us at @CrushFragDstroy.

Forums: Yay or Nay? – Crush! Vote! Destroy!

Gr3ml1n GamingWow – there sure is a lot of dust in here! *Cough*

It’s been almost six months, in fact, since we last posted a new reader poll here at CFD!, but that’s something we’re going to try to rectify from here on out… starting now!

It’s no secret that we want to build a community here at CFD! – we love seeing the same faces coming back and commenting on stories, listening to the podcast and generally just engaging with the site all around – but that’s definitely easier said than done.

Setting up forums are one good way for a budding community to grow and engage one another (not everybody likes commenting on posts, after all), but there’s also the trade-off of making sure there’s a desire to use said forums before going through the trouble of setting them up. After all, nothing is sadder than empty, unused forums.

And The Halo: Reach and StarCraft II Beta Key Winners Are…

cfd_logo_big-copyFirst off, thanks to everybody for being patient with us through this. We know you all wanted these keys and I wish we had a couple dozen of them to hand out.

It’s really hard watching everybody beg, cajole, and the like for something like this when you only have one to go around. So believe me when I say this wasn’t picked with any sort of favoritism. The winners were picked totally at random – blame fate, if anything (though I suppose the high number of entries didn’t help either… stupid odds).

However, to every one of you who entered into this in good spirits and good intentions, everyone here at CFD! thanks you. We could have just been jerks and kept the Reach key for ourselves, but we’d rather see it go to a fellow gamer out there – we can all wait until Monday, after all.

But you didn’t come to hear me ramble – you came to see if you won or not. I understand. So without further ado…

The fine folks at Bungie and Microsoft have generously provided us with a brand new, shiny, spiffy early entry key for the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta. For those of you who don’t know, the beta starts on Monday, May 3rd for those who have a copy of Halo 3: ODST, but early entry codes have been flitting around the interwebs for the last day or so, rare as unicorn tears. Well, never let it be said that we here at CFD! don’t love you guys out there, okay?

How do you win it? Hit the jump and find out.

Want a StarCraft II Beta Code? Sure, Why Not?

UPDATE: Entries are now cut off. Winners coming soon!

En Taro Adun, Contestant!

The Good News: We have a StarCraft II multiplayer Beta Key to give away.

The Bad News: We have A StarCraft II multiplayer Beta Key to give away.

As we mentioned on the newest Team DeathChat (if you listened, you’d already know – if you haven’t, SHAME!) we’ve got one code to give away to a lucky listener out there. Rather than coming up with some arcane system for determining who gets it involving Mercury in retrograde and the entrails of a newborn calf on a moonless night, we decided to make it simple.

Team DeathChat Ep. 2 Recording Tomorrow – Give Us Your Words!

Gr3ml1n GamingWell, even though it’s been less than 24hrs since we uploaded the first episode of Team DeathChat, we’re about to dive into the fray again.

Tomorrow morning we’ll be recording the second episode and assuming you didn’t already die laughing at our first attempt, (which you’ve doubtlessly listened to by now, right?) we want your questions, topic suggestions, comments and more.

Currently, our plans are to talk on the issues surrounding Ubisoft and EA’s PC DRM woes – partially related to last week’s aborted discussion on PR disasters (which we had to skip for time). Beyond that, we’re open to public feedback.

Leave a comment below, a message on Twitter (@CrushFragDstroy), on Facebook, or an email – and make it interesting! We need you to help us look good, after all.

Weekend Warriors

Weekend Warriors LogoWhile the industry bigwigs are off playing at the 2010 Game Developers Conference, hobnobbing and rubbing elbows with one another, having fun at their fancy parties and drinking copious amounts of alcohol, for us lowly peons in the independent games press it’s just another Friday night.

And you know what that means, right? Weekend Warriors time!

I’ve been sucked into the demo for Chime on XBLA pretty hard, which I’m sure I’ll be purchasing when I have a couple hundred more points to spare. Also, I’m considering poopsocking the first two Yakuza games in preparation for Yakuza 3, but still have yet to decide for sure on that one. Beyond that, I may be playing the notoriously hard-to-start-up “Podcast Recording” game tomorrow as well as the “Finish Writing Reviews and Previews” game – one that I haven’t picked up in far too long.
