File it under “Stranger Things Have Happened,” I suppose, but this morning Game Informer just revealed the cover exclusive for their January issue. We knew that a new South Park game was incoming soon, but who out there expected an RPG? A full-scale RPG by Obsidian Entertainment and THQ, no less.

Show of hands? Anyone?

Yeah we didn’t think so either.

Still, Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny are no strangers to the idea of immersing themselves in fantastic sword-and-sorcery worlds, as evidenced by the episodes “The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers” and the WoW-centric “Make Love, Not Warcraft,” so this idea may not be as far off base as one might think.

The still unnamed South Park RPG isn’t due until 2012, but details in the new issue will start hitting subscriber’s mailboxes this week. Personally, if they pull this off correctly, I think it could be pretty amazing. Let’s just stick with cautious optimism for now until we know more, though.
