An image surfaced on NeoGAF a couple of days ago, with claims that Capcom’s newest 3DS title–Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D–won’t allow players to reset their save data. Today, In an official statement from Gamasutra, Capcom confirmed this to be true. Though these save functions (or rather dysfunctions) will likely keep many from buying or renting a used copy, the developer claims that secondhand sales didn’t cause these implementations.
“The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability in order to improve mission scores. In addition, this feature does not remove any content available for users,” said the Capcom rep, regarding the game’s save system. “Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, so we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.
But regardless, these justifications could be difficult for skeptical consumers to swallow. With many “cloud” storage methods on the horizon, and the recent increase of DRM (Digital Rights Management), it’s no secret that publishers and developers are attempting to halt used game sales altogether.
