Nintendo 3DS

If you were among the first to own a 3DS, you probably noticed at least one of the following: the launch selection was lackluster, and there weren’t any sort of networking capabilities to distract you from this already mediocre situation. Sure, the handheld console–like many before it–had a rather weak launch setup, and this is easily forgiven over time. But with other concerns and delays on the horizon, will the 3DS truly recover?

In a recent interview with Kotaku, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime addressed these primary concerns; he stated that Nintendo had “Talked to consumers,” and that they were “highly satisfied with the device.” Other potential customers, however, were hesitant because of the 3DS lacking both network capabilities and any sort of “big Nintendo franchise” up for grabs.

But really, how do titles like Nintendogs+Cats and Steel Diver get picked over the Mario and Zelda franchises? Even if Nintendo had waited awhile, they could have released Ocarina of Time 3D (which I was personally expecting myself) as a launch title. The overall feeling consumers get from this experience was that Nintendo attempted to rush it, and unfortunately left much to be desired in the process. Regardless, Nintendo seems confident that the largest setbacks are over, and that the 3DS is ready to deliver the goods. After all, we even have Star Fox 64 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising to look forward to in the next couple of months.

As for the promise of 3D videos and streaming, Fils-Aime claims that a service will be on the way this summer (along with 2D Netflix streaming), and that “It’s going to be fun.”
