Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter

Once upon a time, there was a little game called Neverwinter Nights, which made me skip classes and ignore my college housemates to play through its massive campaign and level up my character using the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. BioWare and Infogrames (now Atari)  launched the game with the Aurora toolset, which allowed for user-generated modules that later became promoted expansions.

Several years later, Obsidian Entertainment and Atari picked up the series for Neverwinter Nights 2, which likewise caused me to seclude myself in my man-cave for some 3.5 Edition D&D goodness and frustratingly long load screens. Three expansions followed, and CD Projekt RED STUDIO used the Aurora engine to produce The Witcher (which I’m still playing), but there weren’t any indications of a third title in the series, except for some whispers about an MMO of some sort.

Well, Cryptic Studios has now outed their new online multiplayer venture, Neverwinter, which they’re calling an “immersive co-op RPG.” The game will be based upon the newer 4th Edition D&D ruleset and feature co-op and solo adventures in the RPG’s titular city, as well as a toolset called “The Foundry” for creating user-made adventures.

As part of the Neverwinter reveal, Cryptic has launched a new website and trailer to show off some of the game’s features and radness. They haven’t given any info on release dates, pricing, or system specs, but we’ll be watching this one closely.
