E3 2011: Ubisoft Press Conference Summary

Rayman Origins

The third press conference of E3 2011 belonged to Ubisoft, who, despite the presence of their overly slick presenter, still trotted out a couple of interesting games.

First up was Rayman: Origins, demoed by Michel Ancel himself. The gameplay looks to be as simple and fun as the presentation is whimsical. Rayman and his brother ran, jumped, slid, and climbed through a demo emphasising the co-op nature of the experience.

Driver: San Francisco: Taking the series (and its main character, Tanner) back to its roots seems to be the focus with D:SF, though the twist alluded to last year was only casual addressed. Rest assured, though, drivin’ will be done.

Far Cry 3: Possibly “the surprise of the show”, Far Cry 3, certainly made an impression with its gameplay trailer. Though featuring many traits of the series (surveying enemies from afar, a jungle setting, and a pleasant, personal chat with a mad man), the footage contained little actual gameplay, focusing instead on the dramatics of the situation; namely, the capture, escape, and recapture of the protagonist.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4: This anachronistic, Inglourious Basterds-esque take on the Brothers in Arms series is a bit surprising, considering the serious, sober tone of the previous games. The infamous squad of comical Nazi-killers–comprised of Stitch, Crockett, Chok, and Montana–runs the gamut of Team Fortress 2-style stereotypes, but if the quality of the humor is just as comparable, Furious 4 could be interesting.

The Adventures of Tintin: As one without absolutely no knowledge of the history of Tintin, the game–which will coincide with the Peter Jackson/Steven Spielberg-helmed 3D film–I’d still consider myself moderately interested by the whimsical adventure tone and what gameplay we’ve seen–including 2D platforming and on-rails sections–of the game.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier: No Kinect functionality demoed here, just a thick slice of campaign, complete with live 4-player co-op. The squad worked together to quietly acquire and take down targets and breach a house together–during which the perspective of each player is shown–in order to retrieve a captured VIP. The game’s various points of distinction, including an augmented reality HUD, cover system,  player cloaking ability, and remote-controlled drone were also thoroughly demonstrated. Complementing the main game is Ghost Recon Online, a free-to-play PC version. No actual gameplay was shown, and the existence of links between the to games was alluded to.

Trackmania 2 Canyon: The trailer for the sequel to the popular Trackmania featured cars (and lots of them) racing over a variety of tracks, and, briefly, the creation of such tracks. Also announced were two more games in the Mania series, Shootmania (a first-person shooter) and Questmania (a role-playing game).

Rabbids: Alive & Kicking: The Rabbids are back with more minigames, though with a Kinect twist this time. The latest in the wacky series features augmented reality games for multiple people to join in on, including a version of whack-a-mole, and a mode where the players must work together to turn their collective bodies into certain shapes (“Here comes a Dracula!”).

Just Dance 3: Announced with a trailer featuring the captured Just Dance exploits of dozens of people, the assuredly powerful third chapter in the sweeping Just Dance saga is set to continue its dominance by supporting the motion controls of all three consoles.

Rocksmith: Though not much gameplay was shown, the appeal of Rocksmith, as alluded to in the trailer, rests in its acceptance of any guitar you may have laying around as its peripheral, instead of forcing a plastic alternative.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved: Like Halo, but with fitness. This sequel looks to be set on adding slightly to its existing, successful framework.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations: The biggest game of the conference was given its due time: An ominous intro cinematic–depicting Ezio on a pilgrimage to uncover secrets of the first game’s protagonist, Altair–was followed by a chaotic gameplay demo, during which Ezio used his multitude of assassin techniques–including smoke bombs in the middle of a fight– and abilities to chew his way through a harbor. The connection between the two assassins, as well as with the other, more fantastic elements of the series, was also heavily alluded to.

  1. Assassin’s Creed. There, I said it. Now I can move to my next obsession.

FarCry 3. I am a HUGE fan of the FarCry series. Even though the first 2 had nothing to do with each other, they still featured the same main character: a spacious environment that allowed me to tackle a task in any way I wanted with the tools and abilities on hand.

I didn’t see this event live but the demo they played in a recording I saw featured a decent amount of game play. The sneaking and stealthy kills look pretty intense.

I’m looking forward to that other Ubi game I mentioned but FarCry has seized my imagination and it won’t let go.
