Soundtrack Spotlight is a weekly CFD! feature devoted to all things VGM. Every week we celebrate the best in game music, highlight new releases and forgotten tracks, and bring you a spectrum of auditory awesomeness.
Wait a minute.
Don’t go yet, I promise it’s good…
If there’s one thing (and there very well may only be) I can unequivocally enjoy about the Wii, it’s the soft, effervescent system menu music, along with the complementary beeps and boops that accompany most simple interactions. Not surprisingly, the 3DS sports a fair imitation.
In addition, the separate functions of the 3DS (e.g., Activity Log, System Settings, Camera) present themselves with a similar echoey dribble or whimsical ditty, which I find eminently enjoyable, gosh darnit.
If listening to the default noises of a handheld isn’t your bag, peruse the smattering of tracks from Face Raiders, the augmented reality face combat game included on every 3DS. Still not legitimate enough? Relax, then, with the carefree sounds of Pilotwings Resort, the latest in the series of perennial launch favorites.

Album: The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile
Composed by: James Silva
On a lighter note, we have the dark, harmonic crush that is The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile‘s soundtrack. Mr. Silva, the driving force behind this beat ‘em up and its predecessor (The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai), has generously made the soundtracks for both games (as well as the single, titular track of I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1) available at any price on the Ska Studios site.

Album: Streets of Rage Remake
Originally composed by: Yuzo Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima
Arranged by: Gecko Yamori, JAXX, B-A-C, Groovemaster303, Kaleth, Sanchizmo
Though pressure from Sega led to the removal of the game from their site, you can still find this massive, completely fan-made tribute to Streets of Rage in some dark corner of the internet. At the very least, sample the game’s nearly forty remixed tracks, still very much alive here.
