Rumors of an impending PlayStation Portable 2 were kicked into overdrive last night when Engadget published leaked photos of a Sony Ericsson phone combined with a PSP.
When closed, the phone looks like a normal touch screen Android device. The phone opens up (exactly like a PSP Go) to reveal a slick-looking set of the familiar PlayStation buttons and D-pad. Of particular note is a touch strip in the middle that seems to confirm dual analog controls. Engadget also gives a list of specs for the device, but doesn’t give any source, so take them with a grain of salt — somehow Engadget knows the processor speed and memory, but doesn’t know the exact size of the screen.
Websites across the ’net are hesitant to call this real, but the variety of pics of the thing make us pretty sure there’s something like this coming to market, though how much it might change is anyone’s guess.
If you want my two cents, I submit that this had better be a PSP 2 and not just another redesign of the PSP. I think the Go proved that that won’t work. I also hope that Sony uses an Apple-like business model and releases the handheld in a phone-less version, or they’ll be cutting out a lot of potential buyers. And, of course, I hope the PSP 2 has some hidden surprises to make it more of a contender after the 3DS launches.
Stay tuned to this site for more info as it develops.

I don’t own a cell phone, but IF this is real, IF I can download games from PSN (PSP, PS1, and PSN games), IF it has 3G internet, and IF it has an *affordable* monthly plan (like maybe $50 after , I’ll consider joining the cellphone age. xD
I heard somewhere that this has been confirmed as a fake, but then again it’s all hearsay and rumours.
But God, I sure do hope it’s real :P Would totally trade in my old one (that just about sends texts and I never answer anyway) for this baby :D
So… that’s two girls interested. If it’s a PSP 2, I’m in. But if it’s just a PSP 1 on a phone… sorry, but it’s too little, too late.
If this is the successor to the PSP, there had better be an “iPod Touch” version. I will *not* use that thing as my phone. Yuck.
I would love for Sony to pull an Apple move–assuming Apple doesn’t buy Sony this week–and release multiple models of the PSP2. A Standard, Go, and Phone edition would be a killer lineup.
