Halo: Reach Gets Versus Firefight, Forge Expands

During last week’s Comic-Con spectacular, Bungie revealed two major additions to its already beefy Halo spin-off, Halo: Reach. Both should be familiar to Halo fans, but might not be quite what they expected based on previous iterations of the franchise.

Firstly, Halo 3: ODST’s entertaining (but flawed) cooperative players vs. AI “Firefight” mode is getting a revamp. The regular Spartans vs. Covenant fights are staying the same, only players now have the option to play as an Elite, who’s objective is to slow or stop the Spartans from scoring points. Elites will have unlimited lives, though each time they die an additional life will be added to the Spartan’s queue of four team lives.

Remember Halo 3’s celebrated “Forge” editor? It was a cool first step into a limited console map editor, but ultimately became a supplement to custom gametypes. Forge World (as Bungie calls it) is leaps and bounds ahead of their previous effort. Instead of simply moving objects around pre-existing maps, up to eight players can team up to place over 150 objects, structures, and building blocks (think Tony Hawk-style park editors, only more sophisticated). Bungie’s always excellent ViDoc series has more info for you:

Look for a review of Halo: Reach coming to a Crush! Frag! Destroy! near you on or about the game’s release on September 14th, 2010.

  1. That video just convinced me to buy Halo: Reach. I was a huge fan of Forge and that just made me wet my pants.
