Soundtrack Spotlight is a weekly CFD! feature devoted to all things VGM. Every week we celebrate the best in-game music, highlight new releases and forgotten tracks, and bring you the best in auditory awesomeness.
Due to the longtime lack of Western-style video games, we’ve also been grossly deprived of a lot of great accompanying music (awful, I know). Fortunately for us, Rockstar’s old west epic Red Dead Redemption rode into town just a few days ago, saddled with a regular posse of high-caliber tracks.
Yee-haw.
So what could be a better way to enjoy a trip back to the turn of the 20th century than to feature not just the music of Redemption, but also the first game in the series, Red Dead Revolver? Absolutely nothing, partner. So strap on your six-shooters and get a few coffins ready, because I’m fresh out of references.

There’s quite a bit of material between the two albums, but most of it actually comes from Red Dead Revolver. Though both display recognizable traits of the genre, there is an audible difference, attributed to the artists of each. The score for Redemption was done mostly by Bill Elm and Woody Jackson, whereas the bulk of Revolver’s is a fantastic mish-mash of works from numerous Italian film composers, the most notable being Ennio Morricone.

To promote the release of its first-person brawler Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live Arcade, Atlus and ACE Team have made the full soundtrack available to download on the Zeno Clash website. If you haven’t had the chance to experience the game in all its majestic weirdness, the soundtrack should give you a decent representation. It’s intense, pounding, and best of all, free.

This week’s Retro Revival comes courtesy of European hip-hop artist Akira the Don. The album, A Tribute to the Music of Street Fighter, samples from both the original game soundtracks and other Street Fighter related songs to create an album that sounds both retro and fresh. All fifteen tracks are free to download here.
