The numbers are in, and according to a story over at Siliconera, Atlus has a lot to smile about.
Many knew that Demon’s Souls was ridiculously awesome. Many also knew it was doing pretty well in the US. In fact, most of us probably guessed it had done better than pretty much anyone had expected. However, it may come as a bit of a surprise just how much better the arguably legendary “Hand-You-Your-Ass-On-A-Platter-While-You-Accept-It-With-A-Smile-And-Ask-For-Seconds” Action/RPG had done.
Basically, it destroyed its expected sales numbers. Decimated them. It turned its projected sales into the same kind of quivering mass it turns its player-base into.
Atlus’ plan was to sell a respectable 75,000 copies in the US. Apparently not content with such a paltry sum, Demon’s Souls decided to sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 280,000 copies instead. That’s over three times, as in 3x, or triple what they’d expected. In fact, it’s actually closer to four times (3.733333… to be exact).
While I could go on about how Atlus should thank the fans with some DLC, I won’t. I’ll just sit here, content in the knowledge that a “niche” title has done me proud while quietly hoping this makes a sequel unavoidable.

My husband and I spent SOOOOO much time on that game. The game was scary to me, so I haven’t completed the game yet. o.O; I can’t bring myself to going into that jail place again. *shivers*
Anyways, I am so happy that Demon’s Souls has done so well! It is such an excellent game and has made me want to go back and check out From Softwares PS1 game “Shadow Tower”. I had it demo-ing in the store not realizing the connection- now that I know I want to play it. It looks just like Demon’s Souls only older. xD
Maybe with as well as Demon’s Souls sold, we might get another game from From Software. Demon’s Souls 2!!!! That would be sweet!
I’d suggest avoiding Shadow Tower…
Don’t get me wrong, I love First-Person RPGs like King’s Field, but Shadow Tower was terrible. I bought it years ago, stubbornly refusing to entertain the thought that it could be bad. Mostly because it was a part of a genre I love so much. But no, Shadow Tower is awful. If you can, I’d recommend playing any of the 3 King’s Field games (2 for Playstation, 1 for PS2) released in the US instead. Much, much better games. ;)
Also, Demon’s Souls is awesome.
Lol, is it really that bad? xD I did notice on the Wikipedia article, it mentioned King’s Field. There’s a copy of it at my store, maybe I should through it in the demo unit and check it out. Thanks for the heads up d(^_^)b
You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy it, King’s Field has been one of my favoriet series for years. :D
hands down demons souls was one of my fav ps3 games, only thing that could have made it better is if your friends could join you instead of hoping and wishing it was them that summoned you
A good way around that , assuming you could work it out via messages/chat beforehand, is to pick a specific out-of-the-way spot on a level to use your stone. I was able to play for quite a few hours with some friends of mine by hiding our markers off in a corner. ;)
