Heavy Rain is already considered by many to be one of the most moving video games ever made, but just in case anyone out there isn’t moved by the emotional tale of a father’s search for his kidnapped son, developer Quantic Dream wants to at least make sure that they move while they’re playing it. According to an article published in Chief, a Belgian gaming magazine, (translated from Gamer.nl) Heavy Rain will be receiving support for Sony’s upcoming motion controller, PlayStation Move.
This should come as no surprise; director David Cage has been dropping hints that he was thinking of adding support for the Move since the game’s release. In fact, in an interview on a recent episode of 1UP.com’s 4 Guys 1 Up podcast Cage told a story about how Quantic Dream had made a proposal to Sony to develop a motion controller peripheral specifically for use with Heavy Rain. Sony declined and Cage’s motion controller never made it to the prototype stage but motion control was clearly in the plan for Heavy Rain from very early on.
One of the most notable features revealed about the Move so far is the ease with which developers can add support for the new controller in their existing games. At GDC this year, SOCOM 4 developer Zipper Interactive claimed to have added Move functionality to their game in just a few weeks. Quantic Dream will no doubt want to take their time to make sure the controls are as authentic as the game’s original Sixaxis controls, but with the Move not slated for release until the “distant future” of November 2010 it’s not inconceivable that the studio might have something ready for the peripheral’s launch.
Whether or not you are a fan of the motion control movement, you have to admit that the idea of seeing what Quantic Dream can do for Heavy Rain with the PlayStation Move is intriguing. At the very least it promises to offer the most realistic fridge door controls of any game ever. In fact, I’m going to go practice on my own fridge right now!
