Steam Says “No” To Ubisoft DRM

According to a story posted on CVG, Valve may have allegedly made the (wise) decision to (wisely) remove all games incorporating Ubisoft’s infamous DRM from their UK Steam service. Ubisoft, of course, denies this, claiming the reason for two of their newest titles, Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter V (incidentally both with the DRM in question), not being available on the service is due to “a local business discussion between Ubisoft and Steam in UK.”

Personally, I think that sounds like a load of PR bull.

A member of the PC games industry had a different theory for CVG:

“It’s the latest in the Ubisoft DRM blow-up. Steam doesn’t want to lose its reputation for customer service, and these games have angered its user-base.”

I prefer that theory. Maybe I’m being cynical, or maybe I’m just naive, but I’d like to think that there might be some game developers that can understand just how much damage these ridiculously extreme anti-piracy measures can cause.

  1. Way to go Valve! Ubisoft should release a special “Steam” version of the games in question without the DRM in question so that they can provide a superior product that ultimately would be more valuable and desirable.

    Bad DRM is BAD!
