Harmonix Announces Rock Band 3, DLC Junkies Get Nervous

Who needs press releases when you have Facebook? That’s the location where Harmonix decided to confirm – in between your friends’ horoscopes and the ten-thousand Farmville updates they’ve posted today alone – that Rock Band 3 is indeed a thing which is real, and bound for retail in the 2010 holiday season.
Still being distributed by EA (so either the publishing deal has been renewed, or perhaps this title was already covered under the previous one), Rock Band 3 promises to “innovate and revolutionize the music genre once again”. No word just yet on what these innovative, revolutionary updates will entail.
I speak for everyone out there who’s spent an almost obscene amount of money on Rock Band DLC when I say that Harmonix had best make every currently available track forward compatible with the new game or they’re going to be facing a seriously uphill battle against all of the consumer goodwill they’ve built up over the last couple of years. You don’t establish your platform as the go-to for the biggest library of songs and then jerk it out from under the rug of your loyal customers.
Not that Harmonix has a track record of doing such. But still, an official statement on the subject would make everybody rest a lot easier.

Wow, I had no idea a third Rock Band was even being considered! Is the genre doing well enough to warrant another plastic instrument game? I don’t know…
I’d be shocked if the third installment didn’t support the old DLC. Even if they add new features I’d be willing to bet that the old songs would just play as they did in the prior two.
That said, I’m looking forward to a new Rock Band. What I really wish they’d do is release new DLC locations and tours from time to time…just to feel like I’m going on tour again and playing some new venues.
