Seeing those first screens of Disney’s up-and-coming Epic Mickey for the first time, I couldn’t help but gnash my teeth in anticipation. It looked amazing. It looked brilliant. It looked, well, epic.
The prospect of playing a video game with a butt-kicking, paint-slinging, famous cartoon character (THE famous cartoon character, really) is an exciting one to say the least. Then I saw it was a Wii exclusive. As I don’t currently own Nintendo’s itty-bitty exercise machine, this caused me to shed many a tear.
If you find yourself in a situation similar to mine – and I’m certain I’m not the only Wii-less individual with a desire to wipe the floor with some clockwork Disney clone butt – there might still be hope. In a post-keynote DICE 2010 interview with Gamasutra (among other outlets) Disney executives Graham Hopper and Steve Wadsworth mentioned the reasoning behind making the title an exclusive, and were promptly asked about the possibility of a port to either of those other two members of The Trio. Wadsworth’s response: “That’s not to say that we won’t go to other platforms [in the future].”
Why the implied change of heart? According to Hopper it’s because of the motion controls. So now that the Xbox360 and the PlayStation 3 have their own prospective waggle-stick equivalents on the horizon, it seems like much less of an issue. Only time will tell if this will really lead to any sort of Epic Mickey ports (Epic Mickey HD, maybe?), but it’s more than enough to regain my interest. How about you guys?
