Not So Sweet News: Ubisoft Says “No” To HD No More Heroes

The past week has been a roller coaster ride for fans of Goichi Suda’s No More Heroes. As one of the few third-party games on the Wii that carries any credibility among the “hardcore” crowd, No More Heroes tends to get more than its fair share of fan attention. Earlier this week, Japan’s Famitsu magazine broke news that the original entry in the series was going to be updated and ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The article revealed that the new version, entitled No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, will contain updated graphics, a Japanese language track (even in Japan, the original game only contained English voices), and a “Very Sweet Mode” which would allow gamers to unlock sexy outfits for the game’s ladies. It sounded great but the only question for us North American gamers was “Is it coming to the West?”
Well, not long after the new game was revealed, Ubisoft – the company who published the original game in the US and will be releasing the sequel No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle next January – told G4 TV that they had decided to pass on Heroes Paradise. Ubisoft didn’t give a reason, but the Wii version of the original game wasn’t exactly a record breaker in the sales department, so you have to think that Ubisoft would consider releasing the game a second time to be a risky proposition, especially in light of the fact that they are already backing the sequel.
That leaves it up to another publisher to pick this one up and bring it over to the US. So gamers who missed No More Heroes the first time around, or who just don’t own a Wii but are still interested in experiencing Travis Touchdown’s wacky and blood drenched journey to become the world’s top assassin will have to keep their fingers crossed for now.
In the meantime, Marvelous Entertainment and Grasshopper Manufacture will be releasing Heroes’ Paradise in Japan on February 25th and No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle will be out here in January courtesy of Ubisoft. In the meantime, enjoy some screenshots.
