While others can’t afford to keep studios open, industry money-house Activision just wants more studios doing the same thing.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, the world’s largest video game publisher has a third development house on-board to make another Call of Duty title.
Since Call of Duty 2 launched in 2005, Activision has enjoyed a yearly installment of the franchise courtesy of an alternating schedule between developers Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Since Treyarch’s introduction, series creators Infinity Ward have gone a separate direction from the traditional World War II historical and taken a more creative (and controversial) approach into modern times and fictional storylines.
This revelation comes on the heels of the entertainment industry’s biggest launch of all time with Activision’s own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Shattering sales figures and peoples wallets, the title sold nearly 5 million units in its first day of availability. Apparently Activision is hungry for more money, and putting another Call of Duty title out will definitely add a new line of padding in Bobby Kotick’s “Benjamins” shoes.
The article also reports Activision has sought guidance from its subsidiary, Blizzard Entertainment, about the possibility of creating a Call of Duty Massively Multiplayer Online game. Though the operating and development costs of such a venture would be colossal, relying on a solid user-base’s monthly contribution would no doubt be a great investment for the publisher.
