GameStop Calls a Preemptive Strike, Launches MW2 Early

Can’t wait for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? Apparently, neither can GameStop. Reports began to surface on Saturday that some GameStop locations in the Northeast (New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, …) were already selling the game, despite the fact that it isn’t slated for release until this Tuesday (Nov 10th).

According to Kotaku, GameStop employees were claiming  to have been granted special permission from Activision to jump the launch date in order to compete with smaller “mom-and-pop” stores who were already selling the game.

Activision, however, later contacted Kotaku with the following statement; denying to have granted any such permission:

“Activision has not given any retailer permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 prior to the Nov. 10 street date. The company fully supports the Nov.10 street date.”

On Sunday, Chris Olivera, vice president for corporate communications at GameStop confirmed that not only had the stores broken the release date but the decision had come from GameStop corporate.  Here is what he had to say:

“This past weekend, GameStop made the decision to break street date and sell reserved copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in select markets where other retailers had broken street date. Our decision followed many conversations with Activision and was an effort to protect our customer base.”

If you don’t live in the Northeast, or didn’t manage to snag a copy early, Modern Warfare 2 goes on sale, officially, tomorrow; but you’re probably already planning to pick it up at midnight tonight; aren’t you?
