As if the best holiday ever couldn’t get any better, Valve announced today an update for Team Fortress 2 specifically for Halloween. The update will feature five specific achievements that will, once unlocked, grant the player access to five different Halloween hats which are described as “moldering, eldritch veils of such manifold depravity, the human eye will not process the sheer enormity of their malevolence, and out of self-preservation will merely show you paper bags with faces on them.”
There will also be a new King-of-the-Hill map entitled ‘Harvest’. The new map will feature exploding pumpkins, whose victims will instead erupt with candy instead of blood and guts, and a wandering ghost who will paralyze anyone with fright. The event will take place from today until November 2nd, giving players plenty of chances for some spooky fun.

The Halloween event is some pretty good fun. The two new hats (one limited to holiday use only, the other usable on all the classes anytime) are a nice feature, seeing as you unlock them with achievements rather than luck. Combine that with explosive gourds and promises of crit candy and you’ve got a pretty solid hunk of fun.
Indeed – Aubrey and I sunk about three hours+ into it last night. I got the paper bag mask and two of the achievements. The pumpkin one is going to be a bitch – people never hold still near them long enough so that I can make them explode. I only have one out of the five required.
Still, it’s been cute so far. I’ll probably be back in there again tonight.
