Valve held a Left 4 Dead 2 press event last night in San Francisco and while CFD! wasn’t there (blasted Midwest!) we can pass along the details from those who were. The big centerpiece of the showing was the reveal of the “Scavenge” multiplayer mode, but those intrepid scamps at 1UP managed to ferret out some details on another potential game mode (or at the very least, a new difficulty level).

Hit the jump for more info – just don’t split the party or that Jockey will be on your back before you know it.

Scavenge is a fast-paced mode that pits two teams – four survivors and four special infected – against each other in a series of three rounds. The survivors are searching for a series of 16 gas canisters scattered around the level to fill a generator while the infected, naturally, do their best to stop them. Each round lasts two minutes and one point (as well as an additional 20 seconds on the clock) are added for each canister a survivor manages to get into the generator. When time expires, the teams switch sides to play out the second half of the round

Infected, including the new Jockey and Spitter classes, can either destroy the gas cans (which do respawn), or just flat out try to kill the survivors. The Spitter can apparently set the canisters on fire with her acid vomit and what would be more satisfying as a Jockey than jumping onto the back of a survivor just after they’ve picked up a precious payload of gas and steering them right into the waiting arms of your non-special infected brethren? Sounds like fun to us.

Meanwhile, while waiting between matches, 1UP’s David “Big Fun” Ellis apparently noticed an option marked “Realism Mode” in the menu, which Valve’s Chet Faliszek said they forgot to remove for the demo. Thierry “Scooter” Nguyen questioned VP of Marketing, Doug Lombardi, who called it an option for the ‘super hardcore player’.

“Take Portal for example: We had our best internal players who could blow through that game in about 30 minutes,” said Lombardi, “but within weeks of launching it we had people on YouTube beating [the testers'] times by 10 minutes or more. Realism is for those players.”

Interesting. Needless to say, I bet those boycotters who claimed this was just a glorified update that could have been pushed out through DLC are feeling a little stupid with each new bit of L4D2 that gets revealed. Ehh, who am I kidding? They still probably don’t care, since it was all about entitlement anyway.
