PS3 Firmware 3.00 Now Available
Sony is officially launching the new 120g PS3 Slim today and, in preparation for an influx of new PlayStation users, Sony released Firmware 3.00 late Monday night. The update brings several new features which will ease XMB (Cross Media Bar) navigation, and give Sony a few more places to promote new content.
Check out the video to get a preview and then hit the jump for more details.
- “What’s New” – Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games.
- Status Indicator – A “small” bar is located in the top right corner of the screen. Inside you will find you user icons, number of friends online, and a icon alerting you to any messages you might have. Located under this is a ticker bringing you the latest updates from the Playstation Network
- Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
- PlayStation Store Shortcuts – Shortcuts to the PlayStation Store have been added under both the Game and Video categories that take you directly to the content that your looking for.
- Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store.
- Trophies – Base and Add-On trophies will continue to combined into one list, but inside that list you can view the number of trophies for the base game or for any Add-On content that you’ve purchased seperately.
At the time of this writing only one of the dynamic custom themes was available.
- LittleBigPlanet ($2.99)
So this update has only been up for a few hours and already there are pages of hate over at the Playstation Blog. While I don’t find it as terrible as some of the people that are commenting on it, I do agree that there is room for improvement. What does the PS3 community of CFD! think about it?

Let us not forget the sparklies on the boot-up screen and the re-designed font (which I’m still none too fond of. Makes me feel like we’re back on PS2 again).
Nothing wrong with the look, I think you just have negative Nancy view of Sony :P
Not at all – I think they’ve made some boneheaded business decisions, but I still buy their consoles and games. And to be frank, the font thing is just a personal preference issue… I actually LIKE the sparklies ;P
I like them as well, went back to the default to see them and know I am staying there. At least until they have a really cool Wipeout Dynamic Theme
I like the sparkles and the what’s new? so I can choose between which PSN game I want to play quicker. Can’t wait for those premium avatars :D
The thing I don’t lke is the friends list. It’s quite ugly D: Though the pretty blue sparkles make up for it.
and we still can’t change the color of the font. Fail.
Yeah, I don’t really love it. The friends list in particular is pretty ugly with the boxes. Could just be me (actually I know it’s not just me… haha). I really like the dynamic themes, but I can’t see buying them. Hopefully some are free eventually. I could also do without the PS Store being in three sections of the XMB. Seems like overkill. It might just be weird because it’s different. I don’t know. We’ll see how I feel after getting used to it. The sparkles are pretty cool I guess… haha. I usually have a theme up so I only see them when choosing my user when I start my PS3.
