Details on the fabled Okami sequel have finally come out, thanks to Weekly Famitsu. Entitled Okamiden: Chiisaki Taiyo, which loosely translates to Okami Legend: The Small Sun, the story states that some time after the end of the first game, demons have began to appear near Kamiki Village and the surrounding area. Sakuya makes a plea to the celestial powers that Amaterasu will return to defend them. However, the busty tree sprite is instead sent Chibiterasu, which appears to be a small, puppy-like version of Ammy. For now, it’s a secret as to what the relationship between Chibiterasu and Amaterasu is.
The game will be developed for the DS by an internal group at Capcom and is being produced by Motohide Eshiro of Ace Attorney fame and directed by Kuniomi Matsushita, who worked on several Dino Crisis games and also directed the Wii port of Okami.
“Around December last year, Matsushita came up to me and talked about making a new Okami that could be enjoyed in portable format,” said Eshiro to Weekly Famitsu Magazine, “He’s very passionate about the game, and he already had a test version created by that time that was extremely high quality, fully capturing Okami‘s unique visuals. Seeing that, I thought we were safe to make it an official project.”
Gameplay will remain relatively the same, with players manipulating the brush to attack demons and solve environmental puzzles. Chibiterasu’s power is much less than that of Amaterasu, so the pup will be depending on friends who will be partnering up with him. The identities of these companions are also a secret except for one: Kuninushi, the son of Susano and Kushi from the first game.
“The basic theme of returning life and nature to the world is the same as in Okami,” said Eshiro, “What’s different is that the relationship with your partners will be given just as much weight storywise. The themes are the same, but the nuances are different.”
The game will be playable at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off September 24th.

People who worked on Ace Attorney and Dino Crisis are working together on Okami for the DS? That sounds extremely weird, but awesome at the same time. I wonder if they’ll be able to pull it off well…
They seem to be pretty excited about working on the project, so hopefully that’ll translate. Either way, I reeeeeeaaally hope they do pull it off well!
I’m a huge Okami fan. This certainly isn’t my ideal Okami sequel due to the system and developer, but it could be cool. I’m optimistic that it will be good and I look forward to seeing more on this game. I’ll be watching closely.
I can’t wait to check this out. The first Okami was a fantastic game, hell, so was AA and Dino Crisis! How could this go wrong?
Three words.
Dino Crisis 3
Three more.
Zombie Cyborg Dinosaurs
;)
I want a Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis hybrid with genetic experiments gone haywire. Of course it would have to keep the originals feel, but play like Dead Space lol. Dino Crisis 3 did sorta really suck though.
I dunno… Zombie Cyborg Dinosaurs seems like a sure-fire hit. I think Capcom just didn’t do enough with the concept. ;)
This makes me a very happy girl, lol.
From the exact moment I finished Okami, I wanted a sequel.
And now I’m getting it.
Yay for meee!
…
Now the problem is getting a DS. Hmm…
Wow, I can’t wait till this comes to Canada! I’ll be sure to get it as soon as it comes out!!!
