And Sony just announced at the pre-GamesCom presser what the rest of the world has essentially known for the last couple of weeks.

Yes, the PS3 Slim exists. Yes, the price is dropping. Yes, it’s happening really soon.

The PS3 Slim, touted as being 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consuming 34% less power, will have the same 160gb HD as the current model and will be in stores by the first week of September. It will retail for $299, 299€ and ¥29,980, respectively, which will also be the price that the remaining 160gb PS3 Phat will be sliding down to tomorrow.

Ahh, anti-climax. My old friend.

(FYI: Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders for the Slim.)

It my be very anti-climatic but at least they did it at last. Will make buying my 2nd one for the bedroom much cheaper :)

It’s about time!!! I’ve been waiting for a price drop for awhile. I might still not pick one up, though. :(

$300 is still a lot to spend on a game system (though Microsoft and Sony would have you believe otherwise).

  3. Well, well, well. Look who finally dragged themselves into the comments section. ;)

Welcome, dude. Glad you finally spoke up.

$300 is not that bad, look at this way any hobby has a entry price + recurring fees.

Lets just take golf, a set of clubs, balls and shoes are going to cost more then a PS3 or a 360. Then add in the recurring greens fees, club dues etc.

Really everything these days cost a bit. But it’s what you get out of it in the long run. I payed $600 for my PS3 on launch day. And so far it’s been awesome and well worth the price. With only the cost of games along the way it’s pretty cheap. A night at the bar for me costs as much as two games a month so really I think it’s cheap entertainment.

  5. I’m pretty happy they didn’t wait until December or something… it’ll be interesting to see how it affects sales in this weak economic climate, eh?
