July NPDs: Wii Sports Resort is King of the Very Small Hill

July was a soft month for big name titles, so it’s not surprising to see the top three slots filled with the few major releases for the month, namely Wii Sports Resort and NCAA Football 10. What’s not especially surprising either is that Wii Sports Resort took the top spot with only a week on the shelves and seeing all but one of the remaining top ten slots fill up with Nintendo titles with a proven long tail. Just to further show you how soft sales were this month, the floor of last month’s top ten, set at 192k+ by inFamous, would fall between slots 3 and 4 of this month’s list.

The hardware front saw everyone continue the year-over-year loss trend except for Microsoft. “The Xbox 360 is the only console system showing a unit sales increase year-to-date,” said NPD’s Anita Frazier, “while the Nintendo DS has the highest sales of all hardware platforms both for the month, and year-to-date.” The order of console sales stayed basically the same as always, with PSP and PS3 playing the flip-flop game this month.

Will the industry come out of this nosedive when the fall season of big releases (the ones that haven’t been pushed back to next year, that is) finally comes around? We’ve got some time before we find out for sure. Hit the jump for the full numbers.
