The first trailer for Guitar Hero: Van Halen has been released and even though we already knew this was coming, it showcases some rather strange decisions by the band.

While we know that the band’s split with founding bassist Michael Anthony in 2004, to be replaced by Eddie Van Halen’s teenage son Wolfgang, it seems like some kind of bizarre voodoo space magic is at work. What else could explain seeing Wolfy represented as being on bass during the band’s classic 80′s period, during which he wasn’t even a zygote yet? He fits in just fine with the band’s current, older incarnation which is also playable in game, but the first bit? That’s some weird, Lost-style time-travel retcon at work there.

At least Guitar Hero: Metallica didn’t allow you to play as retro versions of the band, but force you to keep Rob Trujillo on bass. Oh well. Check it out for yourself
