Monster Hunter Tri Ships Over 1 Million in Preparation to Launch

Remember all those times we talked about how much Japan loves the Monster Hunter series? Yeah, we weren’t kidding.

Capcom Unity reports that Monster Hunter 3 (tri-) for Wii has shipped over one million copies to Japanese retailers in preparation for the game’s launch this coming Saturday.

The newest entry in the long-running series is the first for current generation home consoles and surprised many by making the move to Nintendo, as it had previously been exclusive to Sony’s platforms. New features include the ability to fight beasts in underwater environments and the game will support online and split-screen co-op.

Capcom has been fighting hard to get the brand to establish even a fraction of the foothold in North America that it has back home, hosting events and putting a massive media campaign behind the recent release of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP (which we just reviewed this week). One assumes they’re waiting to see if sales catch fire before announcing a localized port. Based on how more “hardcore” titles have performed on Wii to date in the US, one can’t really blame them.

Awesome. Ive given the Monster Hunter franchise a try before. The experience wasn’t bad, it was just on a handheld. IF this does make it to the states, i already have my classic controller on simmer.
