Today, ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda, revealed their acquisition of Doom-developer id Software. Though any new id games will be published through Bethesda, the press release notes that id will continue to operate as its own studio with the stalwart John Carmack at the helm. He had this unsurprisingly upbeat quote to share:
“This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward. We will now be able to grow and extend all of our franchises under one roof, leveraging our capabilities across multiple teams while enabling forward looking research to be done in the service of all of them. We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future. As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am.”
One can’t help but ponder the possible fruits to bear from this new acquisition. Considering Fallout 3‘s weakest element, its actual gun play, and id’s inability to create something fresh with its wealth of experience and franchises (Rage excluded), perhaps this partnership will prove beneficial to not only the studios involved, but to gamers as well. All in due time, I suppose.
