Say what you will about Grasshopper Manufacture’s head honcho, Goichi Suda (better known as Suda 51 to you kids out there), but you’d best not say it too loudly. Why’s that, you ask? Simple – this man is dangerous.
How dangerous? How about dangerous enough to kill a company…with his mind!
Allow us to explain. Ahem…
In an E3 interview with Siliconera, Marvelous Interactive’s president, Yasuhiro Wada joked when asked how development was going on Suda’s upcoming, secretive PlayStation 3 exclusive.
“If we do that [game] we might go bankrupt. We are making it, but if we make everything then it’s a little too risky,” said Wada.
Risky is a very apt term for Suda’s projects – they garner rabid support and praise from his slice of hardcore fans and are usually praised by critics for being innovative, if unevenly implemented. Sadly, niche appeal almost never translates into commercial success.
Suda, well known for his love of the rebellious artistic aesthetic and his adoption of the rallying cry “Punk’s Not Dead”, may not be guaranteed money in the bank for publishers, one can hope his projects at least break even enough to keep him churning out more quirky titles for years to come. Speaking as a personal fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
