Even if you think the Metal Gear franchise is too pretentious and up-its-own-butt for your tastes, you have to admit that Hideo Kojima has brought something different to the world of video games. Now we’re going to get to see what kind of weirdness Team Kojima can cook up when they get their hands on…Castlevania?
Teased last summer as simply Lords of Shadow, with no stated connection to the Castlevania series, E3 2009 proved to be the stage for MercurySteam and Kojima Productions to unveil their unholy union with one of 2009′s favorite new buzzwords: re-imagining.
Sporting a cast of voice talent including Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle, Jason Isaacs and Natasha McElhone, Lords of Shadow promises to take Castlevania fans in a “bold, new direction” with this fresh take on the franchise. Gone are the Belmont clan as the main series protagonists; instead you play as Gabriel, a member of the Brotherhood of Light. The End of Days is upon the world and the dead wander the earth. Fell beasts roam the land and the mysterious Lords of Shadow threaten to spread their evil to all they touch.
Gabriel, wielding the Combat Cross, will traverse the open world environments while guided by the soul of his dead wife. Will he defeat the Lords before their tyranny drag us all into darkness? We’ll have to wait until 2010 to find out.
