Fans of the multi-million selling Halo franchise sometimes forget that not everyone fighting the good fight against The Covenant is a cybernetically-enhanced Übermensch like series protagonist, Master Chief. What about the little guy? What about the kid who signed up for the UNSC to earn money for college and ended up getting sucked into an intergalactic holy war? Who’s going to tell his story?

Bungie will: Halo 3: ODST details the story of “The Rookie”, an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper who finds himself separated from his team in New Mombasa before the events of Halo 3. The new E3 trailer below will give you peek.

When it was originally announced last year, Bungie claimed that they wanted to get this game onto store shelves at less than the typical $60 price point, citing it as more than an expansion pack but less than a full new title. It appears that either they added more to the game than was originally known or someone higher up the food chain didn’t like that idea, as the price information dropped at E3: Halo 3: ODST will be hitting store shelves on September 22nd, 2009 at $59.99. A “collector’s pack” version with a limited edition ODST wireless 360 controller will go for $99.

However, it does seem like we’re getting some more goodies for the price. Hit the jump for details on what else you’ll be getting, along with more screenshots than you can shake a dead Brute at.

So you want to know what else ODST will have in store for your $60?

How about:

  • “Firefight” mode – which sounds like an answer to Gears of War 2‘s Horde mode: up to a four-man ODST squad will take on waves of increasingly tougher enemies while Halo 3‘s modifying Skulls are progressively turned on, constantly upping the difficulty and tension.
  • A standalone multiplayer disc that has not only 3 new maps, but also the original Halo 3 maps as well as the Legendary, Heroic and Mythic map packs – 24 multiplayer maps in all. Quite a bit of territory to teabag enemies over, if you ask us.
  • Pre-orders from select retailers will earn you a redeemable token that unlocks Sgt. Johnson in multiplayer.
  • Finally, every copy of ODST will allow access to the upcoming beta of the recently announced Halo: Reach.
