I first read Dante Alighieri’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy, when I was in junior high. What I remember was the story of a somewhat emo dude, pining for the loss of his not-girlfriend who then takes a trip through the afterlife with the ghost of a Roman poet. What I don’t remember was him tearing Hell a new one, God of War-style.

Well this is just what it looks like we’re getting from Visceral’s EA published title, Dante’s Inferno. Oh sure, in this version Dante still bemoans the loss of his beloved Beatrice, but when did he wield a scythe that he took from the Grim Reaper himself? I don’t remember this in the original poem.

Okay, so while they may have taken some “creative liberties” with the source material, it still looks like it may be a competant action title. Check out the E3 trailer below from EA’s YouTube account. We would have linked to ours, but for some bizzare reason Viacom seems to think they have some manner of copyright claim and disabled it. Fun times.

Dante’s Inferno is built on the same engine Visceral used for Dead Space. Here’s to keeping our fingers crossed that it turns out to be worth the wait, since it’s not due for PS3, PSP and 360 until next year. That is, if these guys don’t get to it first…

Check out some E3 screens and concept art below. Abandon all hope, ye who enter the jump.
