On stage at the Microsoft press conference yesterday, one of my personal “most anticipated” titles awakened from a long, silent dormancy, quelling fears that it had been cancelled altogether. In case you didn’t catch my oh-so-sly punny-ness in that last sentence, (awakened…get it? A. Wake?) the title in question is none other than Remedy’s Alan Wake.
For those who may have just said “Alan who?” perhaps some backstory is in order: Alan Wake is the tale of a bestselling author who has been in a creative slump. His wife, Alice, takes him on vacation to the scenic mountain town of Bright Falls, ostensibly to recharge his creative batteries. However, his wife soon goes missing and Alan finds his stories coming to horrific life right in front of his eyes. Hit the new E3 trailer below for more.
Remedy actually played a live demo onstage at the presser and I have to say, it looks pretty sweet. The genre seems to be a mix of action and survival horror. Alan wields a flashlight, which he uses to drive away the dark, nasty…somethings that are coming for him. During the demo (and above in the video) he can also be seen using emergency road flares when other options fail. I would expect the usual variety of puzzle solving and monster fighting wrapped in a delicious, psychological shell, a la Silent Hill.
