In a deliciously meta promotional move, GameStop announced (and EA confirmed) today that if you pre-order the heavy metal epic, Brütal Legend, from them, you will be rewarded with riches the likes of which mortal man has never seen before – an in-game, Tenacious D guitar.

Yup, you read that correctly. A character voiced by Jack Black will be playing a guitar “inspired by” Jack Black’s actual band which isn’t actually a real band, but is. Very meta indeed.

Quoting from the GameStop website: “Reserve Brutal Legend and receive a GameStop Exclusive Tenacious D in-game guitar. This amazing piece of badness will feature an entirely new and different suite of effects – not only a unique, sexy body inspired by the members of Tenacious D, but new sound effects, new voice over work from Jack Black and Kyle Gass and a new visual effects suite – trust us, it’s going to rule very, very hard. This epic guitar will also be seen by other players in multiplayer, albeit briefly, as you destroy them with this GameStop Exclusive Guitar. Wait, voice-over work too? So now a character voiced by Jack Black will be playing a guitar voiced by Jack Black and inspired by Jack Black’s actual band which isn’t actually a real band, but is? This just got even more convoluted, kids. Regardless, I think “epic” is indeed the right word for such an event. And this makes me even more glad I didn’t already jump the gun on pre-ordering.
