Earlier this morning, the interwebs found themselves all in a tizzy because of news that Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe had secured the publishing rights for PAL region PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
“Oh noes!” they said. “Does this mean since Sony has the exclusive that the DS, Wii and 360 versions are scrapped?”
“Maybe it’s just a timed exclusive,” said others, nervously shuffling their feet and clutching their pre-order receipts close to their chests. “I’m sure we have…*gulp*…nothing to worry about.”
“Hey, neat! There’s going to be a PSP version! That’s new!” said one kid, before being cuffed upside the head by the near-panicked mob.
CFD just rolled its eyes, wondering if people had suddenly forgotten what “PAL” meant and carried on, business as usual.
Then, shortly thereafter, normalcy and sanity returned to the world as GamesIndustry.biz announced that they had spoken to Atari pres and CEO, Jim Wilson, who confirmed what should have been fairly obvious to anyone with half a brain: the Sony publishing deal is exclusive to PAL territories only. The rest of the world? Business as usual.
“The Sony Computer Entertainment partnership is exclusive to Europe, Atari is going to be publishing on all platforms in the US on June 16,” clarified Wilson. “We assessed the situation of the Ghostbusters franchise in Europe and saw that a united partnership with Sony was the best approach to maximise the long-term value of the franchise. We have an opportunity here to have first-party support behind such a significant franchise and the opportunity to then go back and publish the other SKUs later on.”
See? Silly people jumping at shadows like they were…well…ghosts, I suppose.
