Red Steel was one of the highly hyped launch titles back when Wii rolled out in 2006. The promise of first-person gun and sword-play with motion controls led many a gamer, myself included, to wild flights of fancy at how awesome this brave, waggling new world was going to be. Those who finally got to play it that fateful November day found that it was…wanting. Yes, ‘wanting’ is a nice word. Much better than ‘sucks’.
Flash forward almost three years: Wii MotionPlus is on the horizon, promising a new level of fidelity in waggle sensitivity that could finally make the 1-to-1 motions required for the swordfighting game we all dreamed of back in 2006 a reality.
And then Ubisoft confirms the existence of Red Steel 2.
No pesky multiplayer to take resources and time away from them hopefully crafting a good single player experience and what’s this? Wii MotionPlus support! Dare we dream the impossible dream once again? We don’t want to get our hopes up, but it’s hard not to be ever so slightly excited when the following clip hit the net this evening.
I have to admit, this looks like it could be interesting. How much is “smoke & mirrors” hype and how much is real remains to be seen, but we’ll mark ourselves in the “Cautiously Optimistic” column for now. Props on the pseudo-western setting and seeming new direction for the series – now please just don’t screw it up by getting voice actors as painfully bad as those in the first one?
Credit to this clip goes to a few different places. Kotaku seems to have broken the story first with an embedded Brazilian MSN video clip, but the loading was slow slow, I didn’t bother with that one. Then, Joystiq linked to the above YouTube version (that it found via GoNintendo), which is what we used. So there you go – sort out the thanks yourself (but save a little for us too, okay?)
