It has to suck being Solomon Grundy, pure and simple. Let’s run down the list of reasons why, shall we?
First off, you’re dead. That’s a pretty big drag to begin with. Oh sure, you came back as a hulking chalk-white zombie-looking thing superhuman strength and endurance, but you had to get murdered and tossed into a swamp to get there and that is, frankly, no fun.
Second, everyone from the Metropolis PD to Superman himself are always up in your business. Let’s argue for a moment that you weren’t already inclined towards rampage and destruction. Perhaps you were just out looking for an ice cream cone or going for a walk in the park? But oh no, some elderly lady out walking her dog has to go and freak the hell out at the sight of you, bringing superpowered busybodies down on your head. Never fun.
Third, you probably smell pretty bad. I’ve never seen Grundy not wearing that same outfit and the poor guy never has any shoes either. If I had the perpetual smell of swamp muck, decay and my own rank-ass feet wafting around me all the time, I’d probably want to smash things and would be constantly grimacing like I was taking a very difficult crap too.
Sony Online Entertainment’s DC Universe Online MMO, due out late 2009/early 2010, will give you a chance to square off against Grundy and a plethora of other DC Comics villains on PC and PlayStation 3. Enjoy the new concept art and screenshots of poor ol’ Solomon after the cut. Note the lack of clenched teeth in the face/head studies – I’ll bet in that world, he was able to enjoy his ice cream unmolested. He’s still dead and smelly, though. Can’t win them all.
