New PS3 Firmware Update Available

The PlayStation 3 is getting another firmware update – v2.70 is now available and brings with it several useful features.

Text Chat

  • Able to create up to 3 chat rooms
  • Each room will accommodate 16 participants
  • Can chat and receive chat invites while in game

Added Friends List Functionality

  • Sort your friends via their online status
  • Attach larger files to messages sent to friends (3MB now instead of 1MB)

Back Up and Transferring Videos

  • Able to back up purchased videos to an external storage device, delete them off of the internal hard drive, and then restore them at a later date for viewing
  • Videos purchased for your PSP can now be transferred to and viewed on your PS3

    That’s good and all but was this the “big” news that Sony was talking about announcing earlier in the week? We been getting this kind of shit from MS for awhile now (Pac-Man CE being the biggest deal in gaming, according to MS that is), we don’t need Sony to follow suit.

  4. I just wanted to add that Xbox Live also had a system update today though I don’t think it added anything. If I had to guess, I’d say it was just security updates. So, in a way, Sony has Microsoft beat today. lol
