Silent Hill Gets Re…umm, Wii-imagined

silenthillcover.jpgConfirming numerous interweb rumblings over the last few weeks, GoNintendo broke the news today that the cover story of the new issue of Nintendo Power is indeed a return of the original Silent Hill.

However, the PlayStation classic isn’t simply getting a Resident Evil-on-GameCube style graphical facelift with some minor gameplay tweaks – a new puzzle here, a new enemy there – but rather, a full on re-imagining. A Wii-imagining, if you will (oh ho, aren’t we clever?) entitled Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

“It’s not a remake or a port. That’s an important distinction. It really feels like a new game,” says producer Tomm Hulett. “The characters play different roles, things don’t necessarily happen in the same order, and the story is taken in lots of new directions. You still play as Harry Mason, you’re still looking for your daughter, and you’ll see familiar elements, but they’re all twisted to betray your expectations.”

“One of Shattered Memories’ most significant and intriguing additions—your answers actually affect how the game unfolds. And it doesn’t end there. the game “watches” you constantly, and your behavior throughout can determine when you’ll meet certain characters, which scenes you’ll witness, and a variety of other factors.”

Sounds rather interesting – Silent Hill meets Choose Your Own Adventure? Personally, as someone who very much enjoyed the original (even as it frustrated the living hell out of me, as art team member Zuri can attest) I’m interested to see where they go with this. It’s nice to see a horror-themed Wii title that’s not an on-rails light gun game for a change.

Well at least it’s not gonna be a light=gun game, take that EA/Capcom.

    Oh God, the little kids!!!!!!

  3. I hate to be the possible bearer of bad news but they didn’t exactly indicate whether or not the game would even be similiar to the original meaning that it COULD be a on-rails game. So far it sounds like it could be an on-rails adventure possibly along the lines of Killer 7 (and hopefully nothing like Myst). I am really skeptical of this one. I love Silent Hill but developers seem to think that games on Wii can’t be traditional in terms of game-play. Only time will tell…

  4. Well, considering the quotes reposted in the original article mentioned puzzles, environmental interaction and “less backtracking” than other titles, I would rather think that it’s not.
Not saying that it’s not impossible – I just think it’s extremely unlikely. We’ll know more for sure when somebody gets their hands on a copy of the issue.
