To be filed in the “Headlines That Write Themselves” category, the public beta for id Software’s browser based Quake Live is now…live. That’s right, browser based. Isn’t technology a beautiful thing?
Head on over to QuakeLive.com and register. After downloading the browser plug-in (and waiting for a bit – there are queues, but for the price, can you complain?) you’ll be ankle-deep in noob-stew. Did I happen to mention this all runs in your web browser? Just thought I’d point that out again.
Speaking as someone who came into the FPS game a bit late, (via Halo) I was never any good at old-skool online shooters the few times I tried them. But now, years of experience later, I think I’m confident enough to put my old memories of humiliation at the hands of Quake and Unreal Tournament aside and give this a try.
EDIT: Expect to wait a little while. The queue was over 6000 people long when I first logged in. Then again, it just went live today, so that’s understandable. Bring a sack lunch.

You make packaged lunches sound gross :(
I’ll try it eventually, but for the time being I think I’ll still glide in “casual” mode and fire-up my Steam-bound Quake III if I want to play — I really don’t feel like waiting.
I missed out on most of the Quake series but I was interested in checking this out. I got into the Beta a couple of weeks ago and checked it out a bit. I had some fun until I ran into some people that had played a lot more Quake and they proceeded to rip me to shreds.
FYI they appear to be having some troubles. I got stuck in a queue of 20 or so people only to be dumped back out to the log in screen. When I logged back in I was in a queue of nearly 17,000 people.
I was in the early beta about 6 months ago, and they didn’t have support for controllers so I had grown tired of it pretty easily. My left wrist just can’t take the WASD.
I’m looking forward to checking it out at some point! I just recently got a Dreamcast mouse so I’ve been testing it out w/ a bunch of games like Q3 and Outrigger. Reminds me of the good ol’ days.
